When approaching the problem related to the way of evaluating higher education students, it can be said that there are teachers who continue to apply the traditional evaluation, and not a formative evaluation. The objective of this article is to analyze formative assessment in higher education students. The study was carried out under the qualitative approach of documentary analysis of academic studies of a scientific nature concerning formative evaluation in higher education; for this purpose, the PRISMA method was taken into account. Therefore, it is concluded that formative assessment contributes to the achievement of basic and professional competencies in higher education students. Furthermore, the application of formative assessment in higher education students has a positive influence because it allows them to achieve competencies, self-regulate their learning, improve their performance and develop their skills as future professionals.
