Abstract Coping with stress was studied in primary caregivers of children with autism, since, being a demanding activity, it generates great efforts and emotional wear and tear, hence the way in which it responds to the demands, will be a key piece to know the styles and coping strategies. Therefore, the objective was to identify the styles of coping with stress in primary caregivers of children with autism, as well as the styles of coping with stress in caregivers according to sex; and the strategies most used by themselves. Study´s design was not experimental, though it´s of type descriptive. The population was made up by 100 people; the Multidimensional Inventory of Coping Estimation COPE was applied. So that, it was obtained the results more precisely that caregivers of both sexes use the focused coping and the emotion and the focused style pointing to the problem; two of the most widely used strategies are positive reinterpretation - growth and acceptance. Thereby, it was concluded that caregivers, depend on the circumstances and they opt for the style focused in the emotion and the style focused on the problem; rarely they use other coping styles.
