Abstract

AIMARETTI, María. Social Democratization and Participatory Videos: The (Forgotten) Contribution of Qhana to the Bolivian Audiovisual History of the Eighties. Rev Cien Cult [online]. 2018, vol.22, n.41, pp.81-104. ISSN 2077-3323.

This work proposes the historical reconstruction of the video field, of the Communication Unit of Qhana: one of the experiences that during the decade of the eighties sought the collective and horizontal production of videos and the transfer of audiovisual media to grassroots communities and unions. To do this -based on interviews and newspaper material- their specific characteristics are discerned: institutional framework -forming part of a larger NGO; the perspective of popular education- in debt to Paulo Freire; material production conditions -in economic and organizational terms; the trajectory and thinking of those who carried out the actions- Nestor Agramont and Eduardo Lopez Zavala; and the dynamics of participatory creation -potential and limitations. Finally, the contact points of Qhana with other experiences of popular education and audiovisual practices are shown- the Mining Film Workshop (TCM), and Alternative Media Integration Center (CIMCA): claiming and contributing to the establishment of a democratic political culture from the cultural field.

Keywords : democratization; participatory video; media transfer; popular education; alternativity; Bolivia.
