Abstract The process of calibration and comparison of two "solmáforos", ultraviolet index (UV Index) warning signals designed to provide a real-time indication of the sun\'s UV intensity in an easy to read traffic light design, (serial numbers 334 and 373) carried out in November 2014 and July 2015 is described. The purpose of the procedure was to ensure that the UV index measurements made by the "solmáforos" were accurate under the specific atmospheric conditions of the city of La Paz, Bolivia. In 2014 results indicated that calibration adjustments were necessary for both "solmáforos". Recalibration was successful for the 373 equipment however the 334 series had to be returned to the factory to be reset. Upon return from factory, the inter-comparison of the 334 again showed inaccuracy and it was submitted to another calibration adjustment. Finally, sufficiently accurate measurements of the ultraviolet index were obtained for the purpose of alerting and preventing the population about the risks of excessive sun exposure.
