Abstract

ALVARADO CHOQUE, Oliver. Transporting coca leaves and power: the chhakas in the construction of territory in the tropical region of Cochabamba (Bolivia). Temas Sociales [online]. 2020, n.46, pp.10-33. ISSN 0040-2915.

This paper explains the role of women coca traders, commonly called chhakas, in the construction of territory in the tropical region of Cochabamba from 1985 to 2005. The chhakas were relevant actors due to their control of the commercialization of coca leaves and their influence in the peasant unions. The results describe the role of the chhakas in managing the primary market, their relationship with the coca growers' central union, and the conflict with the State.

Keywords : Bolivia; commercialization; coca leaves; coca growers' organization; power; territory.
