Abstract Media reports on Bolivian prisons usually focus on cases of riots and exceptional confliets which do not represent thc daily rcality of these centres and are presented in stereotypical terms which do not provide an cffectivc cxplanation of the faets. This article offers a structural interprctation of thc causes of these episodes, including aspects habitually ignored such as thc gender of thosc involved.
