Por ello se planteó determinar la seroprevalencia, mecanismos de infección y pérdidas económicas que ocasiona. El estudio se realizó en cinco fincas de la Provincia de Chimborazo, Ecuador, con bovinos de raza Holstein y Jersey, en donde se determinó la tasa de abortos mediante el análisis de registros reproductivos, usando la técnica de Elisa en sangre se determinó anticuerpos para Brucella abortus y Neospora caninum en 170 vacas y 7 perros pertenecientes a las fincas, para cuantificar las pérdidas económicas se utilizó un modelo bibliográfico de epidemiología veterinaria, el diseño de un plan sanitario para la prevención y control, permitió capacitar a los ganaderos. Los resultados fueron que todos los perros analizados eran portadores del parásito, ubicándose como la fuente primaria de infección hacia las vacas, el 55,60 % de éstas resultaron positivas, 105 correspondieron a vacas que abortaron y de estas, el 70,88 % desarrollaron anticuerpos para Neospora caninum, se calculó una pérdida económica de 552 dólares por cada aborto, lo cual implica una pérdida anual de 8987 dólares por finca. Al no existir tratamiento eficaz, se recomienda eliminar los animales seropositivos y vacunar a vacas sanas, lo cual ayudará a reducir los abortos, además tratar a los perros con Trimetoprim más Sulfadiazina, o Clyndamicina.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT Neosporosis is a parasitic disease of canine origin that causes abortion in cows and has a great economic impact. For this reason, it was proposed to determine the seroprevalence, infection mechanisms and economic losses that it causes. The study was carried out in five farms in the Province of Chimborazo, Ecuador, with Holstein and Jersey cattle, where the abortion rate was determined by analyzing reproductive records, using the Elisa technique in blood, antibodies to Brucella abortus and Neospora caninum were determined in 170 cows and 7 dogs belonging to the farms, to quantify the economic losses, a bibliographic model of veterinary epidemiology was used, the design of a health plan for prevention and control, allowed to train farmers. The results were that all the dogs analyzed were carriers of the parasite, locating as the primary source of infection towards the cows, 55.60% of these were positive, 105 corresponded to cows that aborted and of these, 70.88% developed antibodies to Neospora caninum, an economic loss of $552 was calculated for each abortion, which implies an annual loss of $8,987 per farm. As there is no effective treatment, it is recommended to eliminate seropositive animals and vaccinate healthy cows, which will help reduce abortions, in addition to treating dogs with Trimethoprim plus Sulfadiazine, or Clyndamycin.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="pt"><p><![CDATA[RESUMO A neosporose é uma doença parasitária de origem canina que causa aborto em vacas e tem grande impacto econômico. Por esta razão, foi proposto determinar a soroprevalência, mecanismos de infecção e perdas econômicas que ela causa. O estudo foi realizado em cinco fazendas na Província de Chimborazo, Equador, com gado Holandês e Jersey, onde a taxa de aborto foi determinada pela análise de registros reprodutivos, usando a técnica de Elisa em sangue, foram determinados anticorpos para Brucella abortus e Neospora caninum em 170 vacas e 7 cães pertencentes às explorações, para quantificar as perdas económicas, foi utilizado um modelo bibliográfico de epidemiologia veterinária, o desenho de um plano de saúde para prevenção e controlo, permitiu treinar os criadores. Os resultados foram que todos os cães analisados eram portadores do parasito, localizandose como fonte primária de infecção para as vacas, 55,60% destes foram positivos, 105 corresponderam a vacas que abortaram e destes, 70,88% desenvolveram anticorpos para Neospora caninum, uma perda econômica de $ 552 foi calculada para cada aborto, o que implica uma perda anual de $ 8.987 por fazenda. Como não há tratamento eficaz, recomenda-se eliminar os animais soropositivos e vacinar as vacas sadias, o que ajudará a reduzir os abortos, além de tratar os cães com Trimetoprim mais Sulfadiazina ou Clindamicina.]]></p></abstract>
