A falta de tratamientos antivirales específicos y con la limitada eficacia de los métodos tradicionales de control vectorial, como el uso de insecticidas, surge la necesidad de estrategias innovadoras. Dentro de las cuales la Técnica del Insecto Estéril (TIE), recomendada por la Organización Mundial de la Salud, consiste en la liberación de machos esterilizados mediante irradiación. Esta alternativa demostró ser eficaz y amigable con el medio ambiente con resultados positivos en investigaciones de diversos países como Brasil, México, Singapur y Malasia. Finalmente, el artículo destaca la propuesta de Bolivia sobre la implementación del TIE en mosquitos Aedes aegypti, a través del Centro Multipropósito de Irradiación con el apoyo del Organismo Internacional de Energía Atómica (OIEA), consolidando así al país como referente regional en la aplicación pacífica de la energía nuclear para el control vectorial.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT Viral diseases such as dengue, Zika, and chikungunya are primarily transmitted by the mosquito Aedes aegypti, which pose a growing problem for global public health and in Bolivia. In the absence of specific antiviral treatments and with the limited efficacy of traditional vector control methods, such as the use of insecticides, there arises a need for innovative strategies. Among these, the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT), recommended by the World Health Organization, involves the release of males sterilized through irradiation. This alternative has proven to be effective and environmentally friendly, with positive results in studies conducted in various countries such as Brazil, Mexico, Singapore, and Malaysia. Finally, the article highlights Bolivia&#8217;s proposal to implement SIT in Aedes aegypti mosquitoes through the Multipurpose Irradiation Center, supported by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), thus establishing the country as a regional reference in the peaceful application of nuclear energy for vector control.]]></p></abstract>
