En este artículo caracterizo los patrones espaciales y algunos parámetros poblacionales de un endemismo boliviano, Bulnesia rivas-martinezii (Zygophyllaceae), a fin de contribuir con información de base para la conservación de esta especie, la cual posiblemente tiene una de las áreas de distribución más pequeñas entre las especies bolivianas. Utilizo datos obtenidos en diferentes viajes de campo de hace años para caracterizar los patrones espaciales. Estos nos permiten entender los procesos que pueden ser importantes para explicar la ecología de esta especie. También describo su abundancia y la abundancia de sus especies acompañantes, y su estructura poblacional (basada en el tamaño). Esta especie presenta una distribución discontinua, pero es una de las especies dominantes en las pocas localidades donde aparece, y donde tiende a presentar patrones espaciales agregados. La estructura poblacional difiere entre localidades, pero el reclutamiento en general parece estar limitado y/o la mortalidad es alta en los estadios jóvenes, lo cual representa un potencial peligro para la persistencia de la especie. Hay indicación de selfthinning en la población mayor. B. rivas-martinezii muestra asociaciones positivas con algunas especies de arbustos y cactus, aparentemente debido a requerimientos de habitat parecidos, y positivas y negativas (dependiendo de la escala especial) con dos dominantes de la Prepuna (Pseudosenegalia feddeana y Parkinsonia andícola). Es necesario acometer estudios más específicos sobre la ecología de la especie a fin de mejor interpretar lo que se encontró en este estudio y para brindar más información que lleve a su conservación.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract Bolivia is a megadiverse country, with many endemisms. In this paper I characterize spatial patterns and some population parameters of a Bolivian endemic, Bulnesia rivas-martinezii (Zygophyllaceae), in order to contribute with baseline information for the conservation of this species, which possibly has one of the smallest distribution areas among Bolivian species. I use data obtained in different field campaigns several years ago to characterize spatial patterns. These allow us to understand the processes that may be important for explaining the ecology of this species. I also describe the abundance of this and its accompanying species, and its population structure (based on size). B. rivas-martinezzii shows a discontinuous distribution but is one of the dominant species in the few localities where it occurs, usually showing clumpy spatial patterns. Population structure differs from locality to locality, but in general recruitment seems to be limited and/or mortality is high in young stages, which represents a potential danger for the persistence of the species. There is indication of selfthinning in the largest population. B. rivas-martinezii shows positive associations with some shrub and cactus species, apparently due to similar microhabitat requirements, and positive and negative (depending on the spatial scale) with two Prepuna dominant species (Pseudosenegalia feddeana and Parkinsonia andicola). It is necessary to undertake more specific studies on the ecology of the species to better interpret what was found in this study and to provide more insight aimed at its conservation.]]></p></abstract>
