En un ensayo de comparación de sistemas de cultivos de cacao a largo plazo, que contrasta su producción en monocultivos y sistemas agroforestales con manejo orgánico y convencional, se evaluó cómo dichos sistemas afectan a la diversidad, composición y abundancia de la mesofauna degradadora de hojarasca, utilizando bolsas de degradación con hojas de cacao y hojas mixtas, a lo largo de doce meses. Se registraron diez grupos (nueve órdenes y una clase) de mesofauna, de los cuales los más abundantes fueron los ácaros oribátidos (80% de individuos) seguidos por gasterópodos (6.8%), dípteros (3.4%), isópodos (3.2%), entre otros. El sistema de cultivo que presentó menor abundancia fue el monocultivo convencional, así mismo la diversidad varió solamente entre épocas del año, siendo la época seca más diversa respecto a la húmeda y la de transición. Por otro lado, la composición del ensamble de mesofauna varió entre los sistemas de cultivo como también entre épocas. En este estudio no se observó influencia de diferentes sistemas de cacao sobre la riqueza y diversidad de la mesofauna. Se recomienda incluir a futuro la macrofauna y ampliar el estudio a las capas orgánicas y de rizósfera.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract Leaf litter represents an important source of organic matter that favors the presence of edaphic fauna as a source of energy and nutrients. In a long-term trial comparing cocoa farming systems, which contrasts cocoa production in monocultures and agroforestry systems with organic and conventional management, it was evaluated how these systems affect the diversity, composition and abundance of the leaf litter degrading mesofauna, using decomposition bags with cocoa leaves and mixed leaves, over twelve months. Ten groups (nine orders and one class) of mesofauna were recorded, of which the most abundant were oribatid mites (80.0% of individuals) followed by gastropods (6.8%), dipterans (3.4%), isopods (3.2%), among others. The cultivation system with the lowest abundance was conventional monoculture, and diversity varied only between seasons, with the dry season being more diverse than the wet and transition seasons. On the other hand, the composition of the mesofauna assemblage varied between crop systems as well as between seasons. In this study, we found no influence of different cocoa systems on the richness and diversity of mesofauna. We recommend to include macrofauna in the future, and to extend the study to the organic and rhizosphere layers.]]></p></abstract>
