Hasta la fecha, los análisis de anillos de crecimiento han sido aplicados en 11 especies provenientes de 12 sitios en la región. Como es de esperar, el diámetro en general aumenta con la edad de los árboles, pero los ritmos de crecimiento difieren entre especies, y para una misma especie entre bosques con diferentes condiciones de sitio. Así, para alcanzar 40 cm de diámetro, las especies de rápido crecimiento como Ficus boliviana requieren en promedio aproximadamente 38 años, mientras que especies de lento crecimiento como Aspidosperma tomentosum necesitan en promedio 150 años para alcanzar este diámetro. Especies de rápido crecimiento, ubicadas mayormente en los ambientes más húmedos, registran crecimientos radiales próximos a 1.20 cm/año, mientras que, en los ambientes más secos, las maderas de alta densidad muestran incrementos cercanos a los 0.25 cm/año. Los contrastantes ritmos de crecimiento entre diferentes especies de la Chiquitania indican la importancia de considerar estas diferencias en el crecimiento para aplicar planes de manejos diseñados para cada especie y para cada sitio de crecimiento. Los nuevos criterios para el uso y conservación de los bosques deberán contemplar estas variaciones en los ritmos de crecimiento entre especies, reconociendo diferencias en los tiempos necesarios para que un rodal alcance su madurez y maximice los servicios ecosistémicos que provee a la comunidad.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract Dendrochronological methods have allowed to determine variations in radial tree growth in the tropical dry forests of the Chiquitania in Bolivia. To date, growth ring analyses have been applied to 11 species from 12 sites in the region. As expected, diameter generally increases with tree age, but growth rates differ between species, and for the same species between sites with different site conditions. Thus, to reach 40 cm in diameter, fast-growing species such as Ficus boliviana requires on average approximately 38 years, while slow-growing species such as Aspidosperma tomentosum requires on average 150 years to reach this diameter. Fast-growing species, located mostly in the more humid environments, register radial growth rates close to 1.20 cm/year, while, in the drier environments, high- density woods show increases close to 0.25 cm/year. The contrasting growth rates among different species in the Chiquitania indicate the importance of considering these differences in radial growth rates, and apply management plans designed for each species and site. New criteria for forest use and conservation should take into account these variations in growth rates among species, recognizing differences in the time required for a stand to reach maturity and maximize the ecosystem services it provides to the community.]]></p></abstract>
