</abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en">
Abstract Bertholletia excelsa is a tree species occurring in the Amazon region of Bolivia producing the Brazil nut, an important non-timber forest product. Enrichment planting of the species may facilitate nut harvest and collector's income. To design enrichment Systems, information is needed on the seedling light requirements and on the effect of seedling size on plant growth and adaptation. In a light-response experiment, B. excelsa seedlings of three size classes (of 14, 47 and 80 cm mean height) were grown in three light treatments (1, 10 and 100% of full daylight). Both plant size and light level influenced growth rates and plant morphology. Relative weight growth rate (RGRw) increased with light level and was highest for the middle size class at 100% light (7,1 mg g-1d-1). Leaf area ratio (LAR, total leaf area per gram of plant weight) and leaf weight ratio (LWR, the fraction of biomass allocated to leaves) diminished with seedling size and to some extent with light intensity. Variation in biomass partitioning to leaves (LWR) could be attributed to light- and size-dependent changes in leaf dynamics. Large initial ontogenetic differences influenced the seedlings' responses to light intensity, smaller seedlings being able to adapt better to new light conditions. The most suitable size group for enrichment planting was found to be plants.
</abstract>
