En el presente estudio se analizaron los efectos de la etapa de crecimiento y la concentración de nitrógeno y carbono en la folivoría por insectos en plántulas de mara. No se encontraron diferencias en la folivoría entre plántulas de uno y tres meses de edad. En ambos casos la mayoría de los daños foliares fueron causados por Atta cephalotes y Atta cf. sexdens. La concentración de nitrógeno fue significativamente mayor en la muestra de plántulas con un mes de edad con relación a las que han alcanzado los tres meses. Mientras que la concentración de carbono fue significativamente menor en la muestra de plántulas con un mes de edad con relación a las plántulas de tres meses de edad. En ninguno de los casos, el daño foliar se correlacionó con la concentración de nitrógeno, mientras que en la muestra de plántulas con tres meses de edad, la concentración de carbono se correlacionó negativamente con el daño foliar.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract Herbivore incidence is related with the anatomical and physiological characteristics of leaves and it can influence the natural regeneration of arboreal species like Swietenia macrophylia King (mahogany). This study analyzed the effects of the stage of growth and the concentration of nitrogen and carbon on mahogany seedlings' folivory by insects. No differences in folivory was found between one and three months old seedlings. In both cases the majority of the foliar damage was caused by Atta cephalotes and Atta cf. sexdens. Nitrogen concentration was significantly greater in the sample of one month old than in that of three months old seedlings. While the carbon concentration was significantly smaller in one month old seedlings than in those that were three months old. In any cases was the foliar damage correlated with nitrogen concentration, while in the sample of three months old seedlings, the carbon concentration was correlated negatively with the foliar damage.]]></p></abstract>
