Este estudio tiene como objetivo determinar la correlación entre la celularidad del LCR en el examen citoquímico y la detección patógenos por RT-PCR múltiple y cultivo microbiano desde la gestión 2023 hasta el primer semestre de la gestión 2025 en el Hospital Clínico Viedma de la ciudad de Cochabamba.  Métodos:  se realizó un estudio retrospectivo transversal descriptivo, un total de 556 muestras de LCR fueron analizadas utilizando paneles de meningitis viral y bacteriano por RT-PCR múltiple. Los resultados obtenidos se correlacionaron con los resultados de sus respectivos citoquímicos, así como los resultados del cultivo bacteriológico.  Resultados:  de las 556 muestras analizadas 109 fueron detectadas y 447 no detectadas; el 83,5% detectaron virus y sus respectivos citoquímicos tenían entre 5 - 700 leucocitos/ul. El virus detectado con más frecuencia fue EBV seguido de CMV. Solo en aquellos citoquímicos con predominio de polimorfonucleares se detectaron bacterias como ser S. pneumoniae. Las coinfecciones se presentaron con mayor frecuencia en muestras de pacientes inmunocomprometidos como ser PVVS, las coinfecciones observadas fueron EBV con S. pneumoniae o C. neoformans.  Conclusiones:  este estudio permite visualizar la importancia del correcto uso de los diferentes exámenes de laboratorio para el diagnóstico de meningitis con el propósito de acortar los tiempos de respuesta, reducir la permanencia hospitalaria y disminuir el uso de antibióticos en el paciente.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  Objectives:  the differential diagnosis of meningitis is based on the patient's clinical presentation, laboratory tests, and other factors. This study aims to determine the correlation between CSF cellularity in cytochemical examination and pathogen detection by multiplex RT-PCR and microbial culture from 2023 to the first half of 2025 at the Viedma Clinical Hospital.  Methods:  a retrospective, cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted. A total of 556 CSF samples were analyzed using multiplex RT-PCR for viral and bacterial detections. The results were correlated with the results of their respective cytochemical tests and bacteriological cultures.  Results:  Of the 556 samples analyzed, 109 were detected and 447 were not; 83.5% detected viruses, and their respective cytochemical counts ranged from 5 to 700 leukocytes/pl. The most frequently detected virus was EBV, followed by CMV. Bacteria such as S. pneumoniae were only detected in cytochemical samples with a predominance of PMN leucocytes. Coinfections occurred more frequently in samples from immunocompromised patients, such as AIDS. The associations observed were EBV associated with S. pneumoniae or C. neoformans .  Conclusions:  this study sheds light on the importance of correctly using different laboratory tests for diagnosing meningitis, with the goal of shortening response times, reducing hospital stays, and decreasing the use of antibiotics.]]></p></abstract>
