Debido a que el uso sostenido de fármacos de origen sintético conlleva en una gran mayoría de casos la aprición de efectos secundarios o colaterales como la disfunción renal, hepática o cardíaca, su aplicación hasta el fin de la cura resulta inefectiva y en algunos casos perniciosa. La medicina tradicional basada en fármacos de origen vegetal, ha sido y sigue siendo una alternativa terapéutica para la cura o tratamiento de enfermedades. De entre los componentes químicos de las plantas medicinales, las antocianinas, son un tipo de flavonoides, bien reputados por sus propiedades antioxidantes ideales para la prevención o tratamiento de las enfermedades mencionadas. Los métodos experimentales desarrollados para examinar la efectividad de las antocianinas sobre enfermedades crónicas degenerativas han mostrado resultados potenciales para incorporar estos compuestos dentro formulaciones combinadas con otros fármacos, inclusive sintéticos. Las propiedades funcionales de las antocianinas pueden aportar un valor agregado cuando éstas se incluyen en formulaciones medicamentosas (terapéuticas) o alimenticias (nutraceúticos), yendo así más allá de su utilización común de colorantes naturales]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract Anthocyanins, functional properties, and potential therapeutic applications. The chronic degenerative diseases with the greatest impact due to their high mortality rates are cancer, diabetes, and cardiac syndromes, mainly. Because the sustained use of drugs of synthetic origin leads in the vast majority of cases to the appearance of secondary or collateral effects such as renal, hepatic or cardiac dysfunction, their application until the end of the cure could be ineffective and in some cases pernicious. Traditional medicine based on drugs of plant origin, has been and continues to be a therapeutic alternative for the cure or treatment of diseases. Among the chemical components of medicinal plants, anthocyanins are a type of flavonoids, well known for their antioxidant properties, ideal for the prevention or treatment of the aforementioned diseases. Experimental methods developed to examine the effectiveness of anthocyanins on chronic degenerative diseases have shown potential results good enough for incorporating these compounds into formulations combined with other drugs, including synthetic ones. The functional properties of anthocyanins can provide added value when they are included in drug (therapeutic) or food (nutraceutical) formulations, thus going beyond their common use as natural colorants.]]></p></abstract>
