Más del 80% de la población mundial recurre al uso de las plantas medicinales para el cuidado de la salud. La Verbena litoralis se ha utilizado en diversas culturas por sus propiedades medicinales. Objetivo: Evaluar la actividad antibacteriana de los metabolitos secundarios presentes en el extracto metanólico del tallo de Verbena litoralis K, mediante el método de pozos en agar para la inhibición de Staphylococcus aureus. Materiales y métodos: Se utilizó un estudio experimental, tipo exploratorio, con una muestra de 60 tallos de la planta estudiada, recolectada en la Provincia de El Oro, Cantón Santa Rosa. Resultados: Se realizó un análisis de varianza, ANOVA, que mostró un valor de p &lt; 0.05, lo que permite rechazar la hipótesis nula y sugiere diferencias significativas en, al menos, una de las concentraciones evaluadas, lo que implica un 5% de probabilidad de que los resultados sean atribuibles al azar, minimizando así el riesgo de error tipo I. Conclusiones: la investigación reveló que los tallos de Verbena litoralis Kunth presentan una humedad promedio del 8.15% y un contenido de cenizas totales del 3.39%, lo que asegura tanto la estabilidad como la alta pureza del producto, características fundamentales para su aplicación terapéutica, debido a su alto potencial antibacteriano. El análisis fitoquímico y la cromatografía en capa delgada han permitido identificar metabolitos secundarios, incluyendo alcaloides, azúcares reductores, fenoles y taninos, que sugiere posibles usos terapéuticos.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT Herbalism, also known as phytotherapy, has been recognized as the oldest way to prevent and treat dissimilar diseases. More than 80% of the world's population uses medicinal plants for health care. Verbena litoralis has been used in various cultures for its medicinal properties. Objective: To evaluate the antibacterial activity of the secondary metabolites present in the methanolic extract of the stem of Verbena litoralis K, using the agar well method for the inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus. Materials and methods: An experimental, exploratory study was used with a sample of 60 stems of the plant studied, collected in the Province of El Oro, Canton Santa Rosa. Results: An analysis of variance, ANOVA, was carried out, which showed a value of p &lt; 0.05, which allows us to reject the null hypothesis and suggests significant differences in at least one of the concentrations evaluated, which implies a 5% probability that the results are attributable to chance, thus minimizing the risk of type I error. Conclusions: the investigation revealed that the stems of Verbena litoralis Kunth have an average humidity of 8.15% and an ash content totals of 3.39%, which ensures both the stability and high purity of the product, fundamental characteristics for its therapeutic application, due to its high antibacterial potential. Phytochemical analysis and thin layer chromatography have identified secondary metabolites, including alkaloids, reducing sugars, phenols and tannins, suggesting possible therapeutic uses.]]></p></abstract>

Mais de 80% da população mundial utiliza plantas medicinais para cuidados de saúde. Verbena litoralis tem sido utilizada em diversas culturas por suas propriedades medicinais. Objetivo: Avaliar a atividade antibacteriana dos metabólitos secundários presentes no extrato metanólico do caule de Verbena litoralis K, utilizando o método de poços de ágar para inibição de Staphylococcus aureus. Materiais e métodos: Foi utilizado um estudo experimental e exploratório com uma amostra de 60 hastes da planta estudada, coletadas na província de El Oro, Cantão Santa Rosa. Resultados: Foi realizada uma análise de variância, ANOVA, que revelou um valor de p &lt; 0,05, o que permite rejeitar a hipótese nula e sugere diferenças significativas em pelo menos uma das concentrações avaliadas, o que implica uma probabilidade de 5% de que os resultados são atribuíveis ao acaso, minimizando assim o risco de erro tipo I. Conclusões: a investigação revelou que os caules da Verbena litoralis Kunth apresentam uma humidade média de 8,15% e um teor de cinzas. totais de 3,39%, o que garante tanto a estabilidade quanto a alta pureza do produto, características fundamentais para sua aplicação terapêutica, devido ao seu alto potencial antibacteriano.
