Resumen
BAQUE MALDONADO, Luis Alberto y DE LA PENA GISPERT, Mónica. Economic-legal analysis of the closure of ecuadorian family businesses (2018-2023). Impulso [online]. 2025, vol.5, n.11, pp.577-585. Epub 02-Jul-2025. ISSN 2959-9040. https://doi.org/10.59659/impulso.v.5i11.164.
This study analyzes the causes and effects of involuntary closure of family businesses in Ecuador between 2018 and 2023 from the perspective of Economic Analysis of Law (EAL). Using a quantitative approach, financial indicators of liquidity, solvency and profitability were evaluated by applying Altman, Zmijewski and Springate bankruptcy prediction models on a sample of 319 family businesses registered with the Superintendency of Companies, Securities and Insurance (SCVS). Results reveal that the main causes of bankruptcy are lack of liquidity, high indebtedness, family conflicts and absence of innovation. The study highlights the economic, emotional and legal impact of business closure on owners, employees and the national business fabric. Strengthening public prevention policies and developing sustainable management strategies for family businesses is recommended.
