GARCIA AREVALO, Edwar et al. Digital twins for road infrastructure monitoring and maintenance: A systematic review. Impulso [online]. 2025, vol.5, n.11, pp.161-181. Epub 02-Jul-2025. ISSN 2959-9040. https://doi.org/10.59659/impulso.v.5i11.136.
Digital Twins (DTs) are emerging as a promising technological solution for the efficient management and proactive maintenance of road infrastructure. The objective of this study is to analyze the scientific literature on the application of Digital Twins for road infrastructure monitoring and maintenance. The study's approach is qualitative, based on a systematic review guided by the PRISMA methodology. The databases used are Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Twenty-one published studies from 2020 to 2025 are analyzed. The findings indicate a predominant use of BIM, IoT, and Artificial Intelligence for condition monitoring and damage detection. Although benefits in efficiency and accuracy are reported, challenges persist in data interoperability, implementation costs, and standardization. It is concluded that, while DTs have great transformative potential, further research is required in large-scale validations and the development of standardized solutions for their widespread adoption.
