The purpose of the study is to explain the effect that exchange rate variations have on imports of consumer and capital goods in Peru, between the period 2012 to 2022. The methodological design follows a quantitative, non-experimental procedure, with longitudinal data, uses 125 monthly observations from January 2012 to May 2022. The results of the econometric estimates obtained results of joint significance of the effects of exchange rate variations of 78.98% on imports of consumer durables and 93.07% in non-durable consumer goods. While, the effects of exchange rate variations have shown a joint significance of 91.90% in imports of capital goods whose economic destination is construction materials; 93.89% in agriculture; 87% in industry and 95.67% in transportation equipment, explaining in each of the models a significance level of 95%, with significant parameters and inversely related between them. It is concluded that exchange rate variations are of vital importance to take precautionary measures in imports of goods and capital.
