ARAUJO ROJAS, Esther Ruth y RUIZ ARAUJO, Jhony Daniel. Characteristics of ethnic identity, ancestral knowledge in health and worldview. Tribunal [online]. 2025, vol.5, n.13, pp.361-380. Epub 02-Oct-2025. ISSN 2959-6513. https://doi.org/10.59659/revistatribunal.v5i13.275.
Ethnic identity constitutes a sociocultural construct forged from the sense of belonging to a group, supported by shared values, beliefs, and knowledge. In the current context, these components are at risk due to processes of globalization, migration, acculturation, and social exclusion. The objective of this bibliographic review is to expose the importance of understanding and strengthening ethnic identity as a means to preserve and value the ancestral knowledge and worldview of indigenous peoples. The methodology consisted of the analysis of 49 scientific articles, one book, two UNESCO conferences, and one doctoral thesis, published between 2011 and 2023 in databases such as Scopus, Scielo, Latindex, Dialnet, and Redalyc, selected using search criteria based on language, document type, and keywords related to cultural identity and interculturality. The results show that Indigenous peoples face problems associated with the progressive loss of their language, rituals, traditional knowledge, and community ties, especially among young people who migrate to urban settings. It was also identified that ancestral knowledge-transmitted primarily orally-constitutes an intangible heritage of high social, spiritual, and ecological value. It is concluded that the revaluation of ethnic identity requires educational strategies based on ethnoeducation, intercultural dialogue, and community participation. Strengthening identity from childhood not only contributes to the social cohesion of Indigenous peoples but also offers sustainable and ethical alternatives to the contemporary challenges of global development.
