Authentic assessment in the field of basic medical sciences poses a challenge when it comes to choosing the appropriate instrument, especially in the subject of Research Methodology. The objective of this study is to propose the scientific poster as an appropriate instrument for authentic assessment of this subject and an indicator of meaningful learning, elevating it to the level of assessment through simulators. A qualitative study was conducted based on a research question, which led to a bibliographic review in databases on authentic assessment, the inherent characteristics of the scientific poster, and their relationship. Based on this, it was possible to establish the main advantages and limitations of the scientific poster as an instrument of authentic assessment and an indicator of meaningful learning. Based on its characteristics and the type of studies that can be represented in it, it was also possible to propose a design of a scientific poster suitable for the Research Methodology subject. It was also determined that, although authentic assessment is still a utopia in medical education, the integration of research into basic medical sciences will allow students to deepen their levels of assimilation of knowledge in the subject, climb the pyramid of competencies by integrating other knowledge, and be prepared for a significant performance in their work as doctors after graduation, responding adequately to their curriculum and demonstrating the relevance of their knowledge and skills.
