This study critically examines the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in educational formative assessment. In this regard, the aim was to comprehensively analyse the existing literature to understand the impact and contributions of AI in this area, highlighting substantial improvements such as personalisation of learning, instant feedback and adaptation of pedagogical methods. The methodology applied was systematic review and included documentary analysis of 8 original research articles. The results revealed significant advances, from feedback efficiency to improved evaluation of automated text analysis technologies in assessment and the effectiveness of tools such as Lumen. The methodological diversity and versatility of AI techniques is highlighted. In conclusion, this paper provides valuable insights and suggests future research to further advance the effective application of AI in educational formative assessment.
