Abstract

ACOSTA-ROMAN, Mercedes et al. Knowledge of mothers exclusively breastfeeding and the psychomotor development of their children. Vive Rev. Salud [online]. 2026, vol.9, n.25, pp.358-369.  Epub June 01, 2026. ISSN 2664-3243.  https://doi.org/10.33996/revistavive.v9i25.478.

Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) from birth to 6 months of age is essential for the psychomotor development of our children because it provides essential nutrients. The objective was to determine mothers' knowledge about EBF and its impact on the psychomotor development of children under 2 years of age in the Cuna Más de Pampas preschool in 2025. Materials and methods: This was a basic, correlational, non-experimental, relational study. The study sample consisted of 39 mothers. Data was collected using a questionnaire for the knowledge variable and a data recording form for the psychomotor development variable. Results: The majority of mothers (51.28%) had a moderate level of knowledge about EBF. Their children's psychomotor development was assessed as normal in 48.72% of cases, at risk of disorder in 33.33%, disordered in 17.96%, and none as developmentally advanced. The calculated Spearman correlation coefficient was rs=0.688 and its p-value=0.000, confirming a relationship between mothers' knowledge of exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) and children's psychomotor development. Conclusion: Most mothers have a moderate level of knowledge about EBF, and approximately half of the children have normal psychomotor development. The positive and significant correlation between variables suggests that greater maternal knowledge is associated with better developmental outcomes in children.
