Abstract

CERRON LLIEMPE, Hans Peter; SERPA TORRE, Miriam  and  TORRES DIAZ, Yolanda Maribel. Emotional competencies in university students. A systematic review. Vive Rev. Salud [online]. 2025, vol.8, n.22, pp.234-249.  Epub Jan 22, 2025. ISSN 2664-3243.  https://doi.org/10.33996/revistavive.v8i22.373.

The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on global mental health, particularly affecting university students who faced multiple challenges. The objective of this study was to analyze the current situation of emotional competencies in university students through a systematic review. Methodology. A systematic review of scientific articles published between 2018 and 2024 was conducted using databases such as Scopus, SciELO, and DOAJ, with inclusion criteria that limited the search to original articles in Spanish and English. Results. The analysis included 16 articles, most of which were based on Bisquerra's pentagonal model of emotional competencies, highlighting dimensions such as emotional regulation and emotional autonomy. The predominant methods were quantitative, descriptive, and correlational. The results showed a positive correlation between emotional competencies and academic performance, although significant deficiencies in these skills among students were also identified. In conclusion, emotional competencies are fundamental for the comprehensive training of university students, especially in the post-pandemic scenario. Incorporating emotional education into curricular programs is essential to strengthen these competencies, promote mental health, and improve academic and social performance. Further experimental research and the development of psychoeducational interventions focused on strengthening these skills in the university context are suggested.
