Resumen

PALACIOS GARAY, Jessica Paola. Cognitive impairment in late adulthood, dimensions and associated effects. Vive Rev. Salud [online]. 2025, vol.8, n.22, pp.39-49.  Epub 22-Ene-2025. ISSN 2664-3243.  https://doi.org/10.33996/revistavive.v8i22.361.

Cognitive impairment can significantly affect the quality of life of older adults, limiting their ability to perform daily activities and maintain social relationships. The aim of the research was to determine the levels of cognitive impairment during late adulthood in the study population. The research had a quantitative, descriptive approach with a non-experimental design; the Montreal Cognitive Assessment Questionnaire was applied as an instrument to 60 adults of both sexes. A Chi-square analysis was performed to assess the relationship between the levels of cognitive impairment and its dimensions in older adults. The findings indicate that many participants are in the early stages of old age, with 71.6% between 60 and 70 years of age and a slight female predominance; only 21.6% belong to the 71 to 80 age group and there is little representation at more advanced ages. 73.3% present moderate cognitive impairment, 20% mild and only 6.7% show no impairment. The areas most affected by moderate impairment are identification and language, both with 75%, while attention presents 66.7%. Although the analysis did not reveal significant associations between the dimensions, the results underline the need for early interventions in cognitive health for older adults at risk of dementia.
