MACEDO JARA, Jhosep Gherard; HUISA BALCON, Dennis Xavier e RICHARD, Enrique. First report of coloboma in Athene cunicularia (Strigidae) and Lophoneta specularioides (Anatidae) in the wild. Rev. Inv. Cs. Agro. y Vet. [online]. 2025, vol.9, n.26, pp.785-790. Epub 05-Maio-2025. ISSN 2664-0902. https://doi.org/10.33996/revistaalfa.v9i26.381.
Coloboma refers to the absence or loss of a portion of the eye, or failures in its development and affects ocular structures such as the retina and choroid, iris and ciliary body. These abnormalities have intrigued the scientific community since ancient times; However, reports in wild bird species are little known and limited to only 14 species globally. Here we document the first record of colobomas for Athene cunicularia and Lophoneta specularioides. In 2020, a photographic record of colobomas in both species was carried out in the highly anthropized high Andean wetland of “La Moya”, Puno, Peru (3.918 m.a.s.l.). To describe the coloboma identified in each individual, a four-quadrant Cartesian plane with center of origin in the iris was superimposed. Finally, the potential importance of colobomas as environmental health indicators is discussed.
