Semen quality in pigs is a field of research in pig production, as it has a direct impact on reproductive efficiency and, consequently, on farm profitability. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of the temperature and humidity index (THI) on the characteristics of pig semen collected at different times. The approach is quantitative, descriptive, experimental design. It was carried out at the Teaching, Research and Pig Herd Linkage Unit of ESPAM-MFL. Materials and methods: Three crossbred boars were used and an ejaculate was extracted from each animal weekly for 14 weeks. The experimental unit was the ejaculate extracted individually. Ejaculate volume, sperm concentration, mass motility, individual and rectilinear motility, vitality, pH and sperm morphology were evaluated. A mixed general linear model was applied considering the collection time and THI as fixed effects and the boars as a random effect. The collection times were 8:00 h, 12:00 h and 16:00 h. The results recorded an average environmental temperature of 29.24 ± 3.13 °C, accompanied by an average relative humidity of 81.14 % ± 13.02. The THI presented an average value of 80.69 ± 3.25, which indicates the presence of heat stress during the experiment. However, the macroscopic and microscopic variables of the boar ejaculate did not show significant differences (p>0.05), despite this, it was observed that the semen volume varied depending on the collection time. It is concluded that the THI within the range evaluated in this study does not affect sperm quality.
