MORA, Andrés et al. Parasita Cymothoa exigua na cidade de Riobamba, Equador: Análise de prevalência aplicando tecnologias básicas. Rev. Inv. Cs. Agro. y Vet. [online]. 2024, vol.8, n.23, pp.632-642.  Epub 02-Maio-2024. ISSN 2664-0902.  https://doi.org/10.33996/revistaalfa.v8i23.291.

Cymothoa exigua is a crustacean isopod of the Cymathoidae family, which has around 42 genera and 250 diverse species. This ectoparasitic parasite stands out for its wide geographic distribution. The objective of the following work is to estimate the prevalence of this parasite in fresh fish commercialized in the city of Riobamba. The research was carried out with a quantitative, cross-sectional and descriptive approach. Fish samples were taken from different commercial areas of the city of Riobamba, including markets and seafood outlets, where fish from the Ecuadorian coast is sold. The anatomopathological method and the necropsy technique were used to intervene in each fish, observe and describe the lesions and parasites in the positive cases. The parasite Cymothoa exigua was found in 15 of the 55 fish analyzed, which represents an estimated prevalence of 27.27%. It is concluded that the fish of the species Lutjanus campechanus that are sold in the city of Riobamba, were parasitized with the isopod Cymothoa exigua, with a prevalence of 27.27%. It is presumed that there is a lack of control in the distribution and trade of this type of fish between the Coast and Sierra regions, or in turn that the existing controls do not fully comply with the function for the detection of infected animals; in addition, it is vital to consider that, being animals extracted from an uncontrolled environment, in this case directly from the sea, the probability of suffering parasitism increases exponentially.
