CJANAHUIRE, Eliseo Aime et al. Effect of feeding on the productivity of the guinea pig (Cavia porcellus) in the development phase. Rev. Inv. Cs. Agro. y Vet. [online]. 2023, vol.7, n.21, pp.567-572.  Epub 25-Set-2023. ISSN 2664-0902.  https://doi.org/10.33996/revistaalfa.v7i21.237.

Guinea pig production is a productive activity that provides a source of animal protein of high nutritional value for people living in rural areas with few resources. Objective. To evaluate the effect of feeding on the productivity of guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) in the development phase. Materials and Methods. The research was carried out in the small animal farm at the School of Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics of the National University Jorge Basadre Grohmann-Tacna, for 7 weeks with 56 weaned type 1 improved male guinea pigs distributed in 8 cages. The animals were divided into 4 groups or treatments, each treatment (T) consisting of 14 guinea pigs; where T1 was fed with whole feed and T2, T3 and T4 with mixed feed. They were offered pelleted balanced feed, alfalfa and green forage maize. Productive parameters such as live weight gain, feed conversion and carcass yield were evaluated. Results. It was shown that there were no significant differences between treatments in the production parameters of liveweight gain and feed conversion ratio. However, carcass yield was significantly higher in treatment T1 (70.54%) than in the other treatments (69.35%; 68.00%; and 67.25%). Conclusions. The use of commercial feed had an impact on carcass yield compared to other feed rations. Therefore, it is the best option to improve guinea pig carcass yield.
