Abstract

MENDOZA, Pedro Córdova et al. One-pour type solar distiller and water quality purification, Ica. Rev. Inv. Cs. Agro. y Vet. [online]. 2023, vol.7, n.21, pp.511-529.  Epub Sep 25, 2023. ISSN 2664-0902.  https://doi.org/10.33996/revistaalfa.v7i21.232.

Lack of potable water in coastal areas is a global problem that is exacerbated by climate change and water pollution. The single-slope solar still can help address these problems by using solar energy to evaporate seawater, removing salt and other contaminants. Objective. To evaluate the efficacy of a one-slope solar still to purify seawater, using water obtained from Punta Lomitas beach in the district of Ocucaje, Ica. The solar still used in the study was manufactured with inexpensive and readily available materials. Materials and methods. The methodological strategy, is based on the theory of complex systems, the study has a quantitative approach and uses an observational-prospective-longitudinal design, the sampling method used was simple random sampling, the variables measured in the study were salinity, pH, turbidity and the presence of bacteria. Results. The solar distiller, with dimensions of 60 cm long, 40 cm wide and 20 cm high, inclined at 17° with an area of 0.24 m² and a seawater level of 10 cm, showed the obtaining of 0.524 L of purified water. Two operation dates were evaluated, 05/10/2022 (14°C to 29°C) and 14/10/2023 (11°C to 28°C), during a schedule of 09:00 am to 17:00 pm. Water quality parameters met the standard, with BOD5 0.0 mg/L, dissolved oxygen 10 mg/L and thermotolerant coliforms (44.5°C) 0.0 NMP/100 ml. The discussion indicated that the proposed system met the conditions for effective operation and optimal sanitation. Conclusions. The solar distiller is a simple and effective method using solar radiation to purify seawater and generate drinking water.
