Livestock is a highly representative activity in Ecuador, generating work and development, key to food security and a source of 34% of protein supply for the population; however, livestock activity represents a high contribution to greenhouse gas emissions, mainly methane. The objective of the research was to estimate the carbon footprint generated in the year 2022 of a dairy herd, where a compilation and analysis of data related to the management of the components of livestock practices, pastoral system and environmental practices was carried out, the results of which were processed with the direct emissions calculation tool (GLEAM-r) developed by FAO. The results obtained for total greenhouse gas emissions were 433764.10 Kg CO2-eq, where the intensity of milk emissions was 1.75 Kg CO2-eq per liter of milk produced. In addition, the amount of CH4 from enteric fermentation registered 79.83% of total emissions, the amount of CH4 from excreta handling was 1.17%, while the amount of N2O from excreta in pastures registered a percentage of 19%. The intensity results were lower than the reference values recorded for Ecuador (1.9 kg CO2-eq per liter of milk produced), since in this study there is the application of good livestock practices of climate-smart livestock (GCI) that promotes the sustainable increase of meat and milk production with low GHG emissions, adaptation and building of resilience to climate change.
