PEREZ-SALINAS, Marco et al. Effect of the association with lupine (Lupinus mutabilis) and broad bean (Vicia faba) on the agronomic parameters of amaranth (Amaranthus quitensis). Rev. Inv. Cs. Agro. y Vet. [online]. 2022, vol.6, n.16, pp.158-165.  Epub 29-Abr-2022. ISSN 2664-0902.  https://doi.org/10.33996/revistaalfa.v6i16.158.

In Ecuador, the cultivation of amaranth (Amaranthus quitensis) is becoming increasingly important due to the increase in demand, however, to date there is little knowledge about the varieties and the different planting systems to ensure optimal production level. In this regard, in this study, the effect of the association with lupine (Lupinus mutabilis) and broad beans (Vicia faba) on the agronomic parameters of amaranth cultivation was evaluated under the conditions of the municipality of Cevallos, province of Tungurahua. Amaranth was planted at different planting distances (0.4; 0.6 and 0.8 m) and after 30 days the legume species were planted (lupine and broad bean) and the variables plant height, stem diameter and yield (expressed as the total weight of the seed in Kg/ha) were evaluated. The results showed that the yield of amaranth varied according to the type of plant association, observing the highest values when it was planted in association with lupine, being higher when a planting distance of 60 cm was used. Regarding plant height, the highest value was reached when amaranth was planted in association with broad bean plants at 0.40 and 0.60 m and when the association with lupine at 0.40 m. Finally, the diameter of the stem also showed differences due to the effect of the type of association, obtaining the highest value in the association amaranth + broad bean at a distance of 0.60 m. In view of the positive effect on the productive parameters of the amaranth plant, it is possible to conclude that, under the conditions evaluated, the association of A. quitensis with legumes could be a promising option.
