The objective was to evaluate and compare the level of development of the competence Explain the physical world based on scientific knowledge in the field of meteorology in 1st and 5th grade secondary school students at the Proyecto Integral Chavarría educational institution in Los Olivos, Metropolitan Lima, 2024. The study was quantitative, basic, descriptive, and cross-sectional. The sample included 140 students, who were given a knowledge test. The results indicate higher performance in 5th grade: 49% scored above 10 points, compared to 20% in 1st grade. In addition, 37% of boys obtained passing scores, compared to 32% of girls. Sixty-two percent of students have parents who have completed secondary school; of these, 60% were classified as “beginning” level. It is concluded that the development of competence improves with school grade and is influenced by individual and contextual factors.
