The purpose of formative assessment is to achieve significant learning for the optimal performance of students. The objective of this research was to analyze formative assessment as a strategy for the development of learning. A systematic review of research was conducted in the databases Dialnet, Scopus, Redalyc, Latindex and Scielo, between 2019 to 2023 applying the PRISMA methodology. The equation “formative assessment” + “learning development” + “strategy for learning development” was used, with the use of Booleans AND OR. Inclusion criteria were: studies on formative assessment with significant contributions to the research, written in English and Spanish and with summary, development, discussion and conclusions. The exclusion criteria were: duplicity, topics other than the one addressed, and without scientific criteria. The researches agree in characterizing formative assessment as an indispensable strategy for the optimal achievement of students' general education.
