Research fosters critical thinking in students and develops essential skills for their professional future. The objective of this research was to determine the impact of the Research-Based Learning Strategy on the development of research competencies in university students. The study used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design, involving 37 participants divided into experimental and control groups. Three instruments were applied to assess research competencies, a knowledge test, an evaluation rubric and an attitudinal questionnaire on a Likert scale. After an intervention program, the competencies were measured again. Initially, 50% of the control group and 84% of the experimental group reached the developed level; subsequently, 58% of the control group and 100% of the experimental group achieved this level. The statistical results (U = 0.0, Z = -4.870, p = 0.000) show a significant impact of the strategy on the research competencies of the experimental group.
