GUILLEN VILCA, Karina Rosaly e SOBRADO CHAVEZ, Felix Dulio. Development of communication skills with the Picture Exchange Communication System: Systematic review. Horizontes Rev. Inv. Cs. Edu. [online]. 2025, vol.9, n.36, pp.486-500. Epub 21-Jan-2025. ISSN 2616-7964. https://doi.org/10.33996/revistahorizontes.v9i36.933.
The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) has been widely used in children with autism and other disabilities to foster spontaneous and functional communication. This study aims to analyze several scientific studies on the impact and effectiveness of PECS in the development of communication skills in children with disabilities. A systematic review of studies published between 2000 and 2023 was carried out, using the PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar databases. The search equation was “PECS AND communication development AND autism AND disability”. Of 45 studies identified, 20 were selected for analysis. PECS was shown to be effective in language development and in reducing disruptive behaviors, especially when integrated with technologies such as NUI interfaces. It is concluded that PECS is an effective tool for improving communication in children with disabilities, with great potential when adapted to assistive technologies.
