GAMBARINI VERA, Marilu; DIAZ TORRES, Amparo e JURO LLAMOCCA, Miguel Ángel. Effect of a metacognitive strategies program on critical thinking in elementary school students. Horizontes Rev. Inv. Cs. Critical thinking is a key skill for personal and professional development, although it is often neither encouraged nor adequately assessed in educational contexts. One strategy to promote it is the use of metacognitive strategies, which allow one to regulate and control one's own learning. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of a metacognitive strategies program on the critical thinking of elementary school students in a public institution in Cusco. It was a quantitative research, with a quasi-experimental design, using pre-test and post-test in a sample of 60 students. The results indicated that, with a significance level of 0.05, the Mann-Whitney U test yielded a p-value < 0.05 between pre-test and post-test, which supports the alternative hypothesis. In conclusion, metacognitive strategies significantly improved students' critical thinking in the public educational institution in Peru.
