In higher education, research plays a crucial role in the formative process, since it facilitates the acquisition of new knowledge and promotes meaningful learning. This study aims to analyze formative research strategies as a method of development in university students, through a systematic review. An exhaustive search was conducted in the Scopus, Scielo and EBSCO databases, selecting 36 articles, of which 14 met the inclusion criteria. The results highlight that formative research is essential to develop in university students skills such as deduction, critical analysis, and other relevant competencies such as observation, exposition, and the ability to confront ideas, all of which are linked to the process of teaching for research.
