The article presents a reflective review of David Ausubel's meaningful learning, exploring its meaning, nature and characteristics, with a focus on its applicability in higher education. The qualities of meaningful learning materials, the various types of meaningful learning, and the process of knowledge acquisition are also discussed. The study was based on document review, employing qualitative and exploratory techniques to gather relevant information on the importance of meaningful learning in knowledge construction. A variety of sources were accessed, such as books, papers, scientific articles and bibliographies. It is concluded that meaningful learning represents a challenge and an opportunity for the construction of new knowledge. This underlines the need for structural changes in higher education to train future professionals with a reflective, proactive and critical attitude.
