Nowadays, it is necessary to have all the competencies, for the reason that we live in a complex scenario, driven by technology and globalization; this implies that to face the challenges that come, students apart from having strong technical competencies, must also have adequate mastery of communicative competencies (CC), which come to be like the basis of other skills. Therefore, the objective of the study was to identify the development of CC in higher education; under a literature review that began with the search for articles, doctoral theses and books in the following databases: Scielo, Redalyc, Dialnet, Scopus, WoS, EBSCO, ProQuest and Gale; after the application of the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 20 articles remained for the analysis and presentation of results. The following keywords were used in the search process: "Communicative competence", "Communicative skills", "Linguistic competence", "Higher education". To achieve concrete results, they were combined with the Boolean operators "and" and "or". In conclusion, CC is important for academic and professional life; its development must take into account at least certain essential components and through the application of strategies, programs and interventions.
