Evaluation based on the development of competencies is a current priority for educational institutions. Therefore, it is assumed that formative evaluation (FE) is used to learn and acquire the competencies necessary for a correct development in today's society. The objective of this work was to describe the impact of formative assessment on the development of competencies in the educational process through a systematic review of secondary sources at different educational levels. The search was made in Elsevier's Scopus, Ebsco, Scielo and Mendeley databases. The literature review employs the analysis-synthesis and inductive-deductive methods and is guided by the interpretation of scientific literature. In conclusion, formative assessment in the educational process is a strategy of the evaluation system focused on developing meaningful, autonomous and functional learning through a permanent accompaniment.
