In recent decades, competency-based education has been consolidated, seeking to have professionals who contribute to the development of a country, in that sense. The aim of the study was to interpret competency-based assessment in higher education using a descriptive systematic review methodology of articles published during the last five years (2018 to 2022), in the Scopus, SciELO and Web of Science databases. The results of the analyzed studies show that competency-based assessment favors innovation and improves professional profiles, increasing learning achievements; highlighting that the main actor is the student, who must have autonomy and be responsible for their own learning and teachers through this assessment strengthen their own competencies. It is concluded that competency-based assessment in higher education strengthens the students' graduation profile and favors their insertion into the labor market, where they will be able to perform at an excellent level of competence.
