The research was carried out on two variables, important for the area of communication, in order to determine to what extent cognitive skills are related to reading comprehension, in 193 students from the referred area and from the secondary education level. This study is descriptive, correlational and transectional, with a quantitative approach, whose students come from private and public educational institutions, who answered the two instruments elaborated and validated to measure the two variables. The results are recorded in two areas: the level of reading comprehension and the correlation of the variables; the level of reading comprehension is at expected achievement, 121 (62.7%) and outstanding achievement, 55 (28.5%). On the other hand, the correlation of the variables is 0.069 and a p value of 0.338 (p value> 0.05); in conclusion, the correlation is not significant.
