Abstract This study determines the relationship between knowledge management and academic management processes in universities. For this purpose, it proposes a conceptual model based on the review of the literature in which knowledge management is composed of five factors such as acquisition, storage, exchange, creation and application. A methodology with a quantitative approach and a descriptive scope was applied with a non-experimental and cross-sectional design. A measurement instrument with a five-point Likert scale was implemented to record the perception of the respondents, and was validated through a systematic process that includes a panel of experts, a pilot survey and necessary adjustments according to the observations. A sample of 385 teachers was taken from the country's representative public sector universities. For the analysis of the data, the linear regression method was applied, where the dependent variable is academic management and the independent variable is knowledge management. The results show that there is a positive relationship between the variables, the greater the application of acquired knowledge the academic processes improve significantly, thus generating a competitive advantage.
