PATZI ALANOCA, Luis Alberto; PARDO CLAURE, Henry Adam  e  ILLANES VELARDE, Daniel. Wrist and Hand Trauma in the Public Health System of the Department of Cochabamba, Bolivia. Introduction:

Traumatic injuries to the wrist and hand are a common reason for emergency care visits and represent a significant burden in middle-income countries such as Bolivia. Their epidemiological characterization is essential to guide preventive interventions and health-care planning. Methodology: This retrospective descriptive study was based on SNIS records for the year 2024. It included all cases coded under ICD-10 S60-S69 treated in emergency services within the public health system of the Department of Cochabamba. Absolute frequencies and proportions were calculated, and the chi-square test was applied to assess associations between sex and type of injury. Results: A total of 2,894 cases of wrist and hand trauma were recorded; 64.9% occurred in males. The most frequent categories were open wounds (69.8%) and fractures (11.6%). The 15-39-year age group accounted for 47.2% of all cases. A significant association was identified between type of injury and sex (χ² = 23.12; p = 0.0016). Discussion: The findings are consistent with international literature reporting a higher incidence of severe injuries among young males engaged in high-risk occupational activities. The high proportion of open wounds and fractures highlights the need to strengthen labor-risk prevention, improve SNIS registry quality, and expand the capacity of specialized trauma and rehabilitation services. This study represents the first department-level analysis based on official SNIS data in Cochabamba.
