Abstract This desulfurization process allows then to generate a product "chemically stable - non float"; what in the closing stage, does not require environmental measures; while, the sulfur - float product must be managed environmentally and will require special measures in the closing stage but at a lower cost. For the study, a representative sample of tailings from a mining company operating Pb-Ag and Zn-Ag complexes was considered. The physical characterization has been carried forward; chemical, mineralogical and biological. Likewise, the sample has been subjected to static and dynamic geochemical tests of DAR prediction before and after the desulfurization process. From the results obtained in the study it is possible to establish that, through a further bulk flotation stage of sulfides from the tailings studied, it is possible to eliminate the sulphurous fraction; thus generating a non-float residue with about 85% by weight that, in the closing stage of the final disposal site, will not require environmental rehabilitation measures. This implies a "huge saving" in the final rehabilitation phase of the mining site. On the other hand, the sulfur fraction will require an adequate environmental disposition and rehabilitation measures in the closing stage.
