QUELCA CHOQUE, Heber Gonzalo. Study of Experiences with Cadaveric Preparations and The Academic Performance of Human Anatomy and Neuroanatomy Students. Edu. Sup. Rev. Cient. Cepies [online]. 2023, vol.10, n.1, pp.47-56. ISSN 2518-8283. https://doi.org/10.53287/sydc5414wa84x.
This paper studies the relationship between the experiences with cadaveric preparations and the academic performance of students of human anatomy and neuroanatomy subjects at the Faculty of Dentistry of Universidad Mayor de San Andrés University corresponding to 2019 and 2020 administrations, two different moments of teaching and learning anatomy due to the covid-19 pandemic. Using a qualitative and quantitative methodology, a semi-structured interview was carried out with students and the academic record of the university students and of both years was described studying subcategories of analysis: psychological effects; physiological effects and effects on academic performance related to cadaveric preparations. The results have shown that the experience with cadaveric preparations was satisfactory in students who studied the subject in-person and unsatisfactory in those who studied the subject virtually. Fear, headache, tearing, runny nose, cough, and affection for the corpse were the main manifestations of students in the anatomy room. However, despite presenting a satisfactory experience, their grades were lower than those of university students in virtual classes, with 28% passing in face-to-face management (sufficient grade) as opposed to 47% passing in virtual classes. In addition, the number of dropouts from the subject was higher in the 2019 administration with cadaveric preparations in contrast to 2020.
