Abstract

Abstract Study focused on determining the factors that motivate students to choose Social Work Degree at San Francisco Xavier University by considering extrinsic and intrinsic components, which involve indicators of prestige, affiliation, novelty, personal achievement, social value, vocation, as well as economic position. Methodologically, its descriptive scope, in a transversal observational design, the unit of study is conformed by a probabilistic sample of 306 students. To collect data for the variable, the validated Motivation Questionnaire to study Psychology (MOPI) was used, considering motivational factors; it was structured in 35 items in Likert scale; with a reliability level of 0.784 of Cronbach’s alpha. The general results identify a prevalence of motivational factors for choosing a degree, such as prestige and power of 4.83, followed by social value 4.17, that is, recognition of the environment with an average and presenting the lowest incidence to external factors, such as family and friends, submitted to the chi-square test shows an association between intrinsic and extrinsic variables, concluding that intrinsic factors predominate over extrinsiciones.
