Abstract

IZCARA PALACIOS, Simón Pedro. The cultural substratum of femicide. Oikos Polis [online]. 2020, vol.5, n.2, pp.137-174. ISSN 2521-960X.

Abstract Femicide is a crime based on gender. This article aims to examine the cultural substratum that perpetuate in the male psyche a femicidal inclination, which cannot be suppressed or eradicated through more punitive laws. It is concluded that the cultural basis of femicide can be traced back to the southern and northern borders of the Mediterranean, where the expression of the violent culture of honor was sublimated into violence against women. The great religions of the Mediterranean did not eradicate the moral codes of the Mediterranean peoples, but incorporated them into their creed, so that the expansion of Christianity and Islam conduced to the globalization of the Mediterranean culture.

Keywords : Femicide; Mediterranean culture; honor; suicide; woman.
