Abstract: Women transported by sex smuggling networks throughout the North American region, from Central America and Mexico to the United States, generally travel through three safe houses before arriving at the destination. The objective of this article, based on a qualitative methodology that includes carrying out in-depth interviews with 65 Central American women transported by sex smuggling networks, is to describe the situation of women in the safe houses where they stay until they reach the point of destination in the United States. The results of this investigation contradict the official discourse, concluding that violence, kidnappings and sexual abuse were exceptional situations.
